Like It's the Only One You've Got

Never Turn Down Ice Cream

For those of you who don't know, I maintain a playlist called "Excellent Christian Music." Obviously, all of the songs on the list are done by Christian artists (or at least artists who are Christians). For the first time ever, I added a song by a band who is, as far as I know, not Christian. The song? "It's the Only One You've Got," by 3 Doors Down. The song hit me today, and I must say that it has a very good message. Just read the chorus:

"You hide behind your walls
Of maybe nevers
Forgetting that there's something more
Than just knowing better
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not
You've got to live this life you're given
Like it's the only one you've got."

It's not a catch-all perfect statement, but I love the idea that we can't live in fear of living or messing up. Sure, we should be careful about what we do, but sometimes we're going to mess up. It's going to happen. It's how we learn.

And yes, as Christians we have the promise of heaven, so this isn't quite "the only one we've got," but it does make a great point. We need to live this life the best way that we can, living through God and reaching people. Again, we're going to mess up. And it will hurt to mess up. I don’t know if it sounds bad to say that I want to mess up parts of my life, but I’m tired of being afraid to do anything because it might be wrong.

Please take everything I say with a grain of salt. This isn't me trying to be this awesome biblical scholar right now. These are just thoughts that I had earlier today that I felt like sharing. As always, we need to trust God above all.
